GEORGE TOWN – In a series of raids conducted on Sunday and yesterday, Penang police have apprehended 12 individuals, including a police officer and six police personnel, for their alleged involvement in illegal gambling activities.
The arrests took place in Air Itam, and all seven policemen, ranging in age from 27 to 48, were stationed at the same police station. Additionally, five civilians suspected of participating in illegal gambling were also taken into custody.
Penang police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin confirmed the arrests but refrained from providing further details as the case is still under investigation by Bukit Aman police.
“I can confirm that seven policemen and five civilians have been arrested for their involvement in illegal gambling. However, I cannot provide more information at this time as the investigation is being carried out by Bukit Aman police,” he stated during a press conference.
The arrests were made during a two-day operation conducted by Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department based on information and intelligence gathered by the police. As part of the operation, authorities seized a laptop, a smartphone, RM10,959 in cash, and gambling equipment.
